Weekend Update December 12, 2009

Cat and Dog with Santas Claus hatsThis week New Scientist compared dogs to cats in 11 categories in order to determine which is the superior pet. Dogs won “by a whisker.” Despite the obvious light tone of the “competition,” the research was pretty interesting. Check out the video accompanying the article.

Personally, if I didn’t think Gage would constantly terrorize any cat we brought home, I’d probably have one.

On the shelter and rescue front, there was news this week on a glut of chihuahuas in shelters in California, mostly likely due to their visibility in the arms and purses of various pop icons. (Seems like Paris Hilton is capable of doing more than just embarrassing herself!) More evidence that puppies are not good gifts or fashion accessories.

Have a good weekend!

Cool video:) TY. And as to the torrent of Chihuahua's being dumped at shelters in CA, had no clue that the likes of fringe/faux personalities could incite such wrong-headed actions as thinking dogs are just trendy accessories. The next new thing–enter the “pocket pups” UGH! At the Santa Paws event at Petco, Lake Shore saw a couple of these critters. One girl related that her friend bought the puppy for nearly $2K and gave it to her when she found the dog was really sick. Nice. And new owner will have many more bills to come according to vets like Dr. Rubin of AVMA.

I was surprised when I first heard of puppy sales being driven by celebrities too. But then, when you visit the mall and see the puppy store wedged between the shoe and clothing stores, it makes a bit more sense.
