Of Desert Islands and Dog Training

This is an experiment with video blogging. I had an idea and couldn’t figure a way to get an entire blog post out of it, but at the same time it was too long for twitter, so here it is. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Very good question to pose at dog owners! Also, unrelated, you cut your hair!! Looks good! :)

  2. Thanks, about the question and about the hair. :-)

  3. Nicely done Eric. Excellent analogy, very clear. I hope this gets people thinking. I love the idea of a video blog, and you’re welcome to do the same on DSD if you’d like. Oh, and yes, your hair looks good too!

  4. I’m glad you like it. I had meant to cancel it last night.

Chris Brogan (www.chrisbrogan.com) uses this format a lot and I can see why. Writing 4 posts a week is a tough schedule to keep up. I though this idea was a little weak for a blog post, so I figured I would give this a shot.

I need to work on the background, lighting, and get the camera up higher.

I love it! Experiment some more please!

Very well put too, I know which guy I’d choose.

I know what you mean about the writing, I’m finding it hard to keep up with blog, what with writing reports and treatment plans too.

I need to research some good camcorders.

  6. Thanks!

I used the laptop camera (MacBook Pro) for this. If you check out the widescreen videos on the site, like the one on my tutorial page, I used a Canon Vixia HG20. It’s “last years” model but still available in the US for about $500. 30GB hard drive for many hours of video, great battery life, and compatible with everything.

Kelly has already weighed in that she liked it so I doubt my thoughts mean anything ;-) I love the vid blog post idea and I enjoyed your thoughts on the subject. It also might be a different way of looking at things that people might be able to better understand than Jean Donaldson’s you’re stuck on another planet analogy :-)

  8. Good idea Eric! However there is talk on twitter of trainers in these videos dressing up a bit, I mean the Japanese clicker lady was wearing a green kimono! I will look forward to your next video blog and your snazziest tie ;-)

Hmm. Being an equal-opportunity fruit consumer, I’d likely spend about equal time with *both* of them — time from moment to moment dictated by who was in closer proximity to fruit. ;-) And because I crave protein, I’d likely teach both of them to fish — in a my own approach, which tends to combine both the pleasant and difficult news of feedback into something constructive from which the subject(s) can benefit.
Dunno about vlogs, actually — much easier to go through the feed from text reader at work than from a site that embeds video. I tend to skip those, and then depending on the day I may never get back to the stuff I’ve set aside for later. ‘Later’ is such an elusive timepoint. ;-) For my own work, I tend to blog in my pajamas (whoa, world, are you ready for that?) I like to tweak and edit, so I’d probably spend longer tweaking video than text (I’m not a one-take girl.) But it’s a good effort, Eric — might be interesting to see what your blog stats say after including a few more vlogs into your regular posts.

wow interesting thing to ponder…which one…wow.
and i do not think you need to dress up at all for this video blog.
being comfy is what working at home or for yourself is all about..

i usually do not watch ‘videos’ as i have so much going on around me to keep track of or i have to put headphones on to hear and i hate those things..LOL
i am one of those that would rather read than watch..
but i enjoyed this and will most likely be here looking for more

you are interesting to listen to and watch.
not ho hum like many pple seem to be!!

  11. Thanks for the wonderful comments! I promise more video blogs and no pajamas!

  12. Great Video Eric! And I like your hair either way!

  13. That’s really interesting. A part of me wants to say the person who tells me when I do something wrong, because that way I will be learning. However, I think I would take the easy way out and be around the person who gives me positive feedback. Extra fruit is always nice :p Btw, I think the video blog idea is fantastic, more personal. Plus, you're a great storyteller so it makes it much more interesting! :)
