What are the most important things you can do for your puppy? Part 4 – Puppy Proofing

Who left their shoe out???

When we have a baby, we baby-proof. We put those plastic things into the electric outlets, move breakables up high or put them away, put hooks and eyes on door and cabinets, make sure that we never leave anything out that a baby shouldn’t play with, and do all of those other things I last did, gulp, 19 years ago.

When we get a puppy we ask trainers how we can get her to stop taking things, stop putting things into her mouth, go places we don’t want her to go, and pitch a fit when she makes a mess.

Am I putting puppies and babies at the same level? Of course not. One will someday finish college, have a career, and start her own family. The other, according to recent research, may someday grow to be as bright as a toddler.

Food for thought.

Grow up to be as bright as a toddler?! I've seem dogs smarter than some full grown adults! And let's not forget the other dog benefits: they never ask for the keys to the car, don't have to put them through college, no wedding to pay for … and they always think you're the best!

Seriously, I think I was told that dogs don't misbehave – they just don't understand. So puppy proofing sets a dog up for success … makes excellent sense to me.

Puppy proofing is really important – for the puppy's safety! When we got Ty, we did our best to puppy-proof the house, but he was still into everything. They can't help it – they are in a brand new environment with a lot of stuff they've never smelled or seen before. They need to explore! I spent the first two weeks following Ty around, reminding him that chewing on electrical cords was a bad idea, as was tasting the plants, pulling down the towels, and using our shoes for teething. It was a great two weeks – they grow up so quick.
