Letter From A Rescue: Annie

Annie needs a home

Annie needs a home

Older dogs in shelters and rescues tend to get a raw deal. Many adopters have an idyllic vision of getting a puppy and shaping him or her into their vision of a perfect dog — not realizing how little input they have after all. Many are afraid of bringing home an adult dog because they don’t know anything about the dog’s past, making an older dog not an option. The fact is, adopting an older dog can be very rewarding and as far as behavior goes, not really a risk at all. An adult dog’s personality, at least after settling into a new home, is a known quantity.

Annie is an (estimated) eight year old shepherd mix. Her owner was killed in a motorcycle accident. After the accident, in the confusion at her home, Annie panicked and ran away. She lived outdoors on her own in the area for a year before she was finally trapped: emaciated and in poor shape. All along she had been visiting her home, looking for her human.

When she was finally captured she landed in a shelter, where she lived for a year without finding a home. She was on the euthanasia list when Pets Alive rescued her. Annie takes a while to warm up to people (who could blame her?) but once she does she is a complete sweetheart. She would do best in a home where she is the only dog.

If you can’t take Annie in you can help Annie and Pets Alive with a sponsorship. The work a sanctuary like Pets Alive does is not cheap – they are essentially taking in the cases that many shelters would give up on because they don’t have the resources. Cases like Annie.

Eric, where is Annie located? I couldn't find the info on the Petfinder site either.

It's so true that most people adopt puppies and kittens. I found my cat as an adult. I don't know how old he is; we guestimate about 15 or 17. He is much calmer than a kitten. A friend of mine adopted a pit bull mix about 12 years ago. No one wanted him. The best part, besides getting a loving home, this dog was fully trained. It's amazing how loving some of these older pets are.

Yes, I would not choose a puppy again. The time that takes to do things properly means someone has to be at home. I don't have that luxury. But I also prefer the adult dogs. And I know shelters, rescue, sanctuaries, are all hurting from lack of donations now–this recession has just gone on and on for too long. I hope the group gets more funding and/ or sponsors for each animal, and that Annie finds her new family soon.

Stop retail stores from purchasing from puppy mills (as noted by @DancingDogBlog). Soon, there will be fewer puppies to adopt … and adult dogs will be the main source of adoption (I hope). Right now, it sounds like adult dogs waiting adoption need a PR campaign.

What a sweet-looking girl!! And she's already proved that she's loyal – going back to her home to look for her human. I wish we could take her!

I was one of those people hesitant to adopt an adult dog – but when Buster showed up on our doorstep (literally) I fell in love with him, and just had to find a way to make him part of our family. He was in that difficult stage – about a year old – when he still acted like a puppy, but had his full-sized body! He was quite a handful, and I don't regret a moment of it. I wouldn't hesitate to adopt an older dog in the future!

Eric, please keep us posted on Annie's new home – I'm sure she'll find one.

What a heartbreaking story! Annie deserve an amazing home. I just adopted a senior shih tzu that was abandoned and set to be euthanized in the shelter. He is THE BEST dog. He's sweet and settled. Happy as can be. I adore him. I know I won't have him 10 years but its quality not quantity. I hope Annie gets a new home:)

Thank you for telling us that sweet story. All dogs deserve a great home, and it sounds like you just supplied another dog with one!
