A few years ago we experienced some scary episodes with our dogs’ food. Many of the major manufacturers had food that had been tainted by ingredients that were untraceable and all we could do was wait, watch, and maybe even prepare our own food from our food supply.
The FDA doesn’t treat animal food the same way it does ours, which should be scary not just for pet owners but for all of us, because our food supply is very complex and not as distinct from the animal’s supply as you might like to think.
The FDA is trying to take some action. Mary Haight has done some reporting on this over at the excellent Dancing Dog Blog.
(I have also added the FDA widget to this site, down below the fold.)

Much of the commercial dog food on the market today is Nestle, Mars and a handful of other huge companies that also produce foodstuffs for human consumption.
In the USA there is a regulating agency called AAFCO, a sort of watch dog over the production of commercial pet food. I've read that they really don't have a whole lot of power to do much though. In Canada there is no such type of agency at all, which surprises me.
For many reasons I feed my dogs quality human grade raw food.
